“Tell Me About Yourself” — the Answer That Sets Up the Whole Interview

Answer in present–past–future: where you are now, the one or two proof points that got you here (with numbers), and why this role is the next step — in 90 seconds. Worked examples below for freshers, switchers, career gaps and career changers.

Present → Past → Future

1

Present — ~30 seconds

Your role or degree and one line of scope: what you own, how much, where. This anchors the interviewer instantly — they know who is talking.

2

Past — ~40 seconds

The one or two proof points most relevant to THIS job, each with a number. Not your chronology — your selection. Whatever you say here becomes the interviewer’s next question, so pick the story you want to be asked about.

3

Future — ~15 seconds

Why this role is the logical next step. One sentence connecting your trajectory to their opening, then stop cleanly.

Why this order works: the interviewer’s real question is “why should the next hour be about you?” Present-past-future answers it as a thesis with evidence — the same structure they will use when recommending you to the hiring manager afterwards.

Worked examples by situation

Fresher

"I am a final-year B.Tech IT student at SRM with an 8.1 CGPA. Over the last two years I have built three full-stack projects — the one I am proudest of is a campus lost-and-found platform with 900 registered users, where I built the React frontend and the matching logic. I also completed a two-month internship at a Chennai startup where my bug fixes shipped to production. I am looking to start as a developer on a team that ships frequently, which is why this role stood out to me."

Job switcher (3–5 years)

"I am currently an accounts executive at a mid-size logistics firm in Mumbai, where I own receivables for about 120 client accounts and cut our average collection time from 52 to 38 days. I started in a CA firm doing audits, which gave me my grounding in compliance, then moved in-house because I wanted ownership of a live process. I am now looking for a senior executive role with team responsibility — exactly the shape of this position."

Career gap

"I am a QA engineer with four years across manual and automation testing, most recently at an insurance-tech company where I built their first Selenium regression suite — about 300 cases, cutting release testing from three days to one. I took 2024 off for my daughter’s first year, and kept current with an ISTQB certification during it. I returned to contract QA work this January and am now looking for the right full-time automation role."

Career changer

"For five years I ran operations at a family retail business — inventory, vendor negotiation, and eventually a small billing system I had built for us in Excel and then Python. Automating that shop is what pulled me into programming: I have since completed a six-month full-stack program and built two client projects, including a booking system a local clinic uses daily. I am moving into software full-time, and junior developer roles where operations context is an asset — like this one — are exactly what I am looking for."

Adapt the skeleton with your own facts; do not memorise word-for-word — recitation is audible, and the follow-up questions will leave the script anyway.

“Tell me about yourself” — common doubts

Present–past–future, in 90 seconds: where you are now (role or degree, one line of scope), how you got here (the one or two past proof points most relevant to this job, each with a number), and where you are going (why this role is the logical next step). It is the same information as a self-introduction, ordered as a narrative — which is what the question is actually testing: can you summarise yourself coherently.
