What should you NOT say in "tell me about yourself"?

Your life story from school onward, your family background, personal details (age, marital status), salary complaints about your current job, and anything you cannot back up when probed. Also avoid "everything is on my resume" — the question is an invitation to frame the conversation, and declining it reads as either arrogance or emptiness.

How should a fresher answer "tell me about yourself" with no experience?

Present = degree, college, year and specialization. Past = the two strongest things you have done: a project with an outcome, an internship deliverable, a competition rank, a society role with a number. Future = the kind of work you want to start with, mapped to this role. Projects told with numbers are experience — the fresher version of this answer fails only when it has no proof section at all.

How do I handle a career gap in this answer?

One honest sentence inside the "past" section, framed with what you did during it, then move on: "I took a year for a family health situation, kept my skills current with two certifications, and returned to work in 2025." Do not skip the gap — the interviewer sees the dates and silence reads worse than the reason. Do not over-explain either; one sentence, delivered evenly, closes the topic.

Is "tell me about yourself" different from "walk me through your resume"?

Slightly: "walk me through your resume" asks for chronology — go role by role, oldest relevant to newest, one line each plus why you moved. "Tell me about yourself" asks for a synthesis — present-past-future, selective, thesis first. Preparing the synthesis version covers both: for the walkthrough, you just expand the "past" section into order.

How long should the answer be?

Ninety seconds, two minutes at the absolute ceiling for senior candidates with long histories. Interviewers ask this question partly to calibrate your communication: a rambling five-minute answer fails the test regardless of content. Time yourself — then cut a third.

Why this order works: the interviewer’s real question is “why should the next hour be about you?” Present-past-future answers it as a thesis with evidence — the same structure they will use when recommending you to the hiring manager afterwards.
