Resume Format for 2026: The Structure That Gets Read

The correct resume format is reverse-chronological, single column, standard headings — the structure recruiters skim fastest and every ATS parses cleanly. Here is the exact section order, the India-specific answers (photo, declaration, biodata), and free Word downloads with no signup.

The correct section order

This is the reverse-chronological format — the default for every corporate application in India and abroad:

  1. 1

    Contact details

Name, city + state, phone, email, LinkedIn. In the body of the document, never in the page header — many parsers skip headers entirely.

  2. 2

    Professional summary

2–3 lines: experience, specialty, one quantified achievement. Not an objective.

  3. 3

    Work experience

Newest first. Title — Company, City (dates). 3–5 achievement bullets per role, each with a number.

  4. 4

    Education

Degree, institution, year. CGPA/percentage if strong. Freshers move this above experience.

  5. 5

    Skills

The exact terms from the job description, grouped by type. The ATS matches strings, not synonyms.

  6. 6

    Certifications & achievements

Dated, issuer named. Delete the section if empty — no filler.

Freshers: same skeleton, but education and dated projects move above work experience — the fresher resume format guide walks through it section by section.

The three resume format types — and which to pick

Reverse-chronological — pick this one

Experience newest-first, achievements inside dated roles. Recruiters expect it, ATS software indexes it perfectly, and it answers the first question every screen asks: what have you done lately? Use it unless you have a specific reason not to.

Combination (hybrid)

A skills summary up top, chronological history below. Useful for career changers whose last job title doesn’t match the target role — the skills block reframes the timeline without hiding it.

Functional (skills-based) — avoid

Skills groups with the work history compressed to a bare list. Recruiters read it as hiding something (gaps, job-hopping, thin experience) and some ATS parsing drops undated content entirely. If you have gaps, address them honestly inside a chronological format instead.

India-specific format answers

  • Photo: no. Unless the posting asks (aviation, hospitality front-office, some Gulf employers). Photos break parsing on some ATS and invite bias.

  • Declaration: no. A biodata-era convention. Add only when a government form or the employer explicitly requires it.

  • Personal details: contact only. Date of birth, marital status, father’s name, religion — off the resume. They belong only on a biodata an employer specifically requests.

  • Biodata vs resume: different documents. Private-sector jobs expect a resume. If you were asked for a "biodata", see the biodata format guide — and its downloadable file.

  • Naukri profile: mirror your resume. Naukri’s recruiter search is keyword-driven like an ATS — keep the headline and key-skills fields synced with your resume’s terms.

Resume format questions, answered

Reverse-chronological, single column, for almost everyone: contact details, professional summary, work experience (newest first), education, skills, certifications. It is the format recruiters read fastest and every ATS parses reliably. Functional (skills-first) formats hide your timeline and are treated with suspicion by recruiters; use a combination format only when changing careers with genuinely transferable skills.
