Registered Nurse Cover Letter Example

Dear Nurse Residency Program Coordinator,

I am applying for the New Graduate RN Residency on the medical-surgical units at Riverside General. I earned my BSN from Ohio State in May, passed the NCLEX-RN on my first attempt in July, and hold current BLS and ACLS certification.

My 180-hour capstone preceptorship was on a 32-bed med-surg unit, where by the final two weeks I was carrying a four-patient assignment under my preceptor’s supervision: assessments, medication administration, wound care, and discharge teaching charted in Epic. Across clinical rotations in med-surg, telemetry, pediatrics and the emergency department, I learned to prioritize when two patients need me at once and to escalate early. Before nursing school I spent two years as a patient care technician, so twelve-hour shifts and hourly rounding are familiar.

Riverside’s twelve-month residency, with a dedicated preceptor and specialty rotations, is the structured start I am looking for. I am available for any shift pattern and would welcome the chance to interview or shadow on the unit.
