Legal Cover Letter Examples
Legal employers treat the cover letter as a writing sample, which makes it the most scrutinised page in a legal application. These examples cover associate and litigation attorneys, corporate and immigration counsel, paralegals, legal assistants and secretaries, contract managers, compliance officers and law clerks — each a complete letter you can open in the builder and edit, written to the standard a partner expects.
A legal cover letter has to do two things at once: prove the substantive experience the role needs, and demonstrate that you write precisely. Every sentence is evidence of the second. The letters below name practice areas, jurisdictions, matter types and outcomes, follow the formal conventions the profession still expects, and stay under a page — because a partner who reads a padded letter concludes the candidate will write padded briefs.

You have worked in this practice area, in this jurisdiction
Name the area (commercial litigation, M&A, immigration, employment) and the courts or regulators you have worked before. Legal hiring is narrow by design; a general letter reads as a candidate without a specialism.
You have handled matters of comparable complexity
Deal values, case stages, volumes of filings, the size of the document review, the number of contracts managed. Scale tells the reader which level of responsibility you can take on day one.
You produced an outcome
A motion granted, a deal closed, a petition approved, an audit passed, a settlement reached. State it within the bounds of confidentiality — "a seven-figure commercial dispute resolved before trial" is precise enough.
You are admitted, or on the way, where they need you
Bar admission and jurisdiction, exam status, paralegal certification, notary, any required registration. Put it early; it is the threshold question.
You write and research to their standard
Briefs drafted, memoranda, contracts negotiated, research platforms used. And the letter itself: correct citation of the firm and role, no typos, formal register. This is the writing sample.
You know this firm or department
A practice group, a reported matter, a recent expansion, a client sector. One accurate sentence proves the letter was written for them, which legal recruiters check for specifically.
How to structure it
- 1
Open with the position, your admission and your practice area
"I write to apply for the Associate position in your commercial litigation group. I am admitted in New York and have practised in commercial disputes for four years." Formal, complete, two sentences.
- 2
Set out the relevant experience by matter type
Two or three sentences on what you have handled, at what stage, at what scale — in the vocabulary of the practice area. A partner should be able to picture your desk.
- 3
Give one matter with an outcome
What the issue was, what you did, what happened — confidentiality preserved. This is the paragraph that demonstrates judgement, and the one the interview will return to.
- 4
Close formally, on the firm and the next step
A specific reason this firm or department, availability, and a request for an interview. Enclose or attach the writing sample and transcript if requested, and say so.
Questions people ask
Do law firms actually read cover letters?
Almost always, and often before the resume. In legal hiring the letter doubles as a writing sample and a test of attention to detail — a misnamed firm, a wrong practice group or a typo is frequently disqualifying on its own. Partners and recruiting coordinators also use it to confirm the practice area and jurisdiction match before investing interview time. Treat it as the most important page you submit.
How formal should a legal cover letter be?
Formal, in the traditional business-letter format: full addresses, "Dear Mr./Ms. [Surname]" where the name is known, complete sentences, no contractions, a conventional close. Legal employers are conservative about form even when the firm itself is not, and the safe register is the formal one. Keep it to one page; brevity is itself a demonstration of legal writing skill.
How do I describe confidential matters without breaching confidentiality?
By type, scale and outcome rather than by name. "A cross-border acquisition valued in the low nine figures", "a wage-and-hour class action resolved at mediation", "over 200 employment-based petitions with a 97% approval rate" all convey experience precisely without identifying a client. Never name a client or an unreported matter, and check your former employer’s rules on referencing work if in doubt.
How do I write a legal cover letter as a law student or recent graduate?
Lead with your most substantive legal work: a clinic, an externship, a judicial internship, moot court, law review — described by the work done (briefs drafted, clients interviewed, research memoranda) rather than the title. State your bar exam plans and jurisdiction. Then connect your coursework or journal focus to the firm’s practice area. Graduates are hired on writing, research and demonstrated interest in the practice area; the letter should show all three.
Is the same letter fine for a paralegal role and an attorney role?
No. Attorney letters are judged on admission, practice-area depth and matter outcomes; paralegal and legal-assistant letters on certification, the volume and type of support work (discovery, filings, case management systems), and precision under deadline. The register is the same; the evidence is different. Start from the example for the specific role below.
