Nurse Resignation Letter

Nursing resignations are addressed to the nurse manager or nursing superintendent and copied to HR. The unit needs to know your last shift, not just your last date, and whether you can cover any part of the roster already published.

If you are moving abroad or to another hospital, ask for the experience certificate and any registration paperwork in the same letter.

Subject: Resignation — Grace Thomas, Staff Nurse (ICU)

[Date]

Dear Sister Mary,

I am writing to formally resign from my position as Staff Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Holy Cross Hospital. As per my notice period of 30 days, my last working day will be Friday, 16 October 2026; my last rostered shift is the morning shift on that day.

I have accepted a position at a hospital in Manchester, and the relocation date is fixed. I will work all shifts on the published roster through my last day, complete the ventilator competency sign-offs for the two new nurses I am precepting, and hand over my patient assignments with full notes at each shift change. I would be grateful for my experience certificate and a copy of my duty records for the overseas registration process.

I will do everything I can to make the transition smooth — documenting my work, briefing whoever takes over, and remaining reachable for questions. Please confirm my last working day and the relieving formalities in writing at your convenience.

Thank you for everything I have learnt here. I wish you and the team every success, and I hope our paths cross again.

With sincere gratitude,
Grace Thomas
Staff Nurse (ICU)

Names, companies and dates are illustrative. Replace the bracketed date with the day you send it.

What to get right

  • Give the last shift as well as the last date.
  • Offer to complete the published roster; unit managers remember who left holes.
  • Request the experience certificate with unit and duty details — overseas registration bodies ask for it.

Generate yours — pre-filled for this situation

Notice period, reason and tone are set to match the example above. Change anything; the last working day recalculates.
