Immediate Resignation Letter Without Notice

Resigning with immediate effect is a request, not a right, in most contracts. The letter should say so — state the situation briefly, ask for the notice period to be waived or bought out, and offer whatever handover you can manage.

Tone matters more here than in any other resignation letter. The employer is being asked for a favour; the letter should read like one.

Sample letter

Subject: Immediate Resignation — Rahul Menon, Operations Executive

[Date]

Dear Mr. Iyer,

I am writing to resign from my position as Operations Executive at Meridian Logistics with immediate effect. I understand this falls short of my 30-day notice period, and I sincerely request that it be waived, or that I be allowed to buy out the remaining days as per company policy.

A family medical situation requires me to relocate within the week, and I am not in a position to serve notice. I would be grateful if today could be treated as my last working day. I will submit a written handover of all open shipments and vendor contacts before I leave, and I will remain reachable by phone for any questions.

During the notice period I will ensure a complete handover of my responsibilities and will document all ongoing work. Please let me know how you would like the transition planned, and kindly confirm my last working day and the relieving formalities in writing.

Thank you for the support during my tenure. I wish the company and the team continued success.

Sincerely,
Rahul Menon
Operations Executive

Names, companies and dates are illustrative. Replace the bracketed date with the day you send it.

What to get right

  • Ask, do not announce: "I request that the notice period be waived" lands better than "I will not be serving notice."
  • Offer the buyout explicitly if your contract allows it — it turns a breach into a transaction.
  • Hand over something concrete the same day: a document of open work, passwords returned, and a phone number.
  • Expect the relieving letter to be delayed or conditional; get the terms in writing before you go.

Generate yours — pre-filled for this situation

Notice period, reason and tone are set to match the example above. Change anything; the last working day recalculates.

Resignation letter

[Date]

Dear Anil Kumar,

I am writing to resign from my position as Operations Executive at Infosys, effective immediately. I fully understand that this falls short of the standard notice period, and I sincerely request you to kindly consider waiving it given my circumstances. I would be grateful if [last working day] could be treated as my last working day. This decision comes due to personal reasons that need my time and attention at this stage.

I will document my ongoing work and hand over everything I can before I leave, and I am happy to remain reachable for any questions during the transition. Kindly confirm my last working day and the relieving formalities in writing.

Thank you for the support during my tenure. I wish Infosys and the team continued success.

Sincerely,
Priya Sharma
Operations Executive

Tip: hand your resignation over in person if you can, or email it to HR and your manager together — and always get your last-working-day confirmation in writing.

Questions about this letter

You can resign at any time, but most contracts let the employer deduct pay in lieu of unserved notice, withhold the relieving letter, or both. Read the clause, then ask for a waiver or buyout in the letter itself.
