Resignation Letter for a Better Opportunity
Leaving for a better role is the most common reason and the easiest to write — as long as you do not describe the new job. The letter says you have accepted an opportunity; it does not compare salaries or titles.
Decide before you write whether you would accept a counter-offer. If not, the letter should sound settled, and you should say so in the conversation.

Subject: Resignation — Aditya Verma, Business Analyst
[Date] Dear Ms. Kapoor, I am writing to formally resign from my position as Business Analyst at Stellar Consulting. As per my notice period of 30 days, my last working day will be Friday, 16 October 2026. I have accepted an opportunity that aligns closely with my long-term career goals, and this was not an easy decision to make. The three years here — especially the work on the retail analytics practice — have given me the foundation for it, and I am grateful for that. I will do everything I can to make the transition smooth — documenting my work, briefing whoever takes over, and remaining reachable for questions. Please confirm my last working day and the relieving formalities in writing at your convenience. Thank you for everything I have learnt here. I wish you and the team every success, and I hope our paths cross again. With sincere gratitude, Aditya Verma Business Analyst
Names, companies and dates are illustrative. Replace the bracketed date with the day you send it.
What to get right
- Do not name the new employer in the letter; tell your manager in person if you want to.
- Never quote the new salary — it reads as leverage even when you do not mean it that way.
- If you will not accept a counter-offer, say "my decision is final" once, kindly, in the meeting.
