Resignation Letter for Family Reasons
Family reasons cover caregiving, a new child, a spouse’s posting, or an elderly parent. As with personal reasons, you decide how much to say; the letter works with one sentence.
If you would return under different terms — part-time, remote, a later date — ask now. Managers can rarely offer what they do not know you want.

Subject: Resignation for Family Reasons — Rohan Mehta, Team Lead
[Date] Dear Ms. Nair, I am writing to formally resign from my position as Team Lead at Vertex Solutions. As per my notice period of 30 days, my last working day will be Friday, 16 October 2026. I need to step back from full-time work for family reasons that require my presence at home for the foreseeable future. I have valued my five years here and I would be open to a part-time or contract arrangement in future if one becomes possible. In the meantime I will complete the sprint in progress and hand the team’s roadmap over to whoever you appoint. I will do everything I can to make the transition smooth — documenting my work, briefing whoever takes over, and remaining reachable for questions. Please confirm my last working day and the relieving formalities in writing at your convenience. Thank you for everything I have learnt here. I wish you and the team every success, and I hope our paths cross again. With sincere gratitude, Rohan Mehta Team Lead
Names, companies and dates are illustrative. Replace the bracketed date with the day you send it.
What to get right
- State the reason at the level you are comfortable with; "family reasons" is complete on its own.
- If you want flexibility instead of an exit, ask for it before the resignation is processed.
- Ask about parental or carer’s leave if your situation qualifies — it may preserve your job.

Notice period, reason and tone are set to match the example above. Change anything; the last working day recalculates.
