Resignation Letter With Three Months Notice

Ninety days is the notice period for many senior, managerial and specialist roles. A resignation at this level is read by more people — HR, your skip-level, sometimes the client — so keep it measured and specific.

The strongest version pairs a firm date with a transition plan: what you own, who takes it, and by when.

Subject: Resignation — Kavita Desai, Engineering Manager

[Date]

Dear Sanjay,

Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from the position of Engineering Manager at Tech Mahindra. In accordance with my 90-day notice period, my last working day will be Wednesday, 16 December 2026.

After six years, I have decided to take up a leadership role outside the industry. I am committed to a clean transition: I will complete the H1 roadmap documentation, propose an interim lead for each of the three squads within the first three weeks, and run the quarterly planning cycle jointly with whoever you appoint.

During the notice period I will ensure a complete handover of my responsibilities and will document all ongoing work. Please let me know how you would like the transition planned, and kindly confirm my last working day and the relieving formalities in writing.

Thank you for the support during my tenure. I wish the company and the team continued success.

Sincerely,
Kavita Desai
Engineering Manager

Names, companies and dates are illustrative. Replace the bracketed date with the day you send it.

What to get right

  • Name the specific deliverables you will close; vague "smooth transition" language reads as filler at this level.
  • Agree the internal announcement timing with your manager before telling your team.
  • Garden leave is common on long notices — clarify whether you will be asked to stop working early and how that affects pay.

Generate yours — pre-filled for this situation

Notice period, reason and tone are set to match the example above. Change anything; the last working day recalculates.

Questions about this letter

In India and the UK, generally yes as a contractual term; the remedy is usually pay in lieu rather than being forced to work. In the US it depends on the contract and state. Either way, a negotiated early release is common.
